Experience in tutoring writing at the high school level. Tutoring should be something that students look forward to; they get the specialized attention that is impossible to receive in a classroom with anywhere from 20 to 30 students. I like to use humor to keep students engaged, and also to make new material less intimidating. A student that is comfortable with both the material and the tutor, as well as mentally engaged and eager to learn, will perform much better than a student who feels like they are just having information thrown at them. Learning is an individual process, and as such, each student learns differently. As a tutor, is it important to recognize this early on so that all teaching is catered to the student's unique way of processing and analyzing new information.
